Only One of Its Kind in China—FZTBU’s Students Achieve Excellent Result in the Final of the National College Students’ Intercultural Competence Contest
On December 3rd, 2023, the 6th SFLEP Cup National College Students’ Intercultural Competence Contest came to a successful conclusion. The contest team, composed of Chen Wei from Class 2 of Business English in 2022, Wang Han from Class 2 of Software Engineering in 2021, and Chen Weihong from Class 1 of Financial Management in 2021 (whose mentors are Huang Xiaohong, Zhang Wei, and Hu Mingzhu), performed outstandingly and won the second prize nationwide in the highly-skilled finals! In the national finals, there are representative teams from well-known 985 and 211 universities such as Fudan University, Wuhan University, Jilin University, Nankai University, Sun Yat Sen University, and Shanghai International Studies University. FZTBU is the only award-winning university among similar ones in China.
It is reported that the SFLEP Cup National College Students’ Intercultural Competence Contest was founded in 2018 and was included in the contest directory of the National College Student Contest Analysis Report 2023 released by the Chinese Higher Education Association in 2023. It has become one of the highly professional and recognized contests in the English subject. Since the launch of this contest, 52 Chinese student teams and 20 international student teams have stood out from nearly 741 universities in 23 provinces across the country and advanced to the national finals. This national finals include case presentations (case development, cross-cultural theoretical analysis, and specific solutions or reflections), expert judges asking questions (impromptu comments), and interpreting famous quotes and phrases; the finals consist of knowledge quizzes (involving knowledge of Chinese culture, world culture, and intercultural communication), scenario reviews (interpreting and analyzing intercultural related video materials on site), and telling Chinese stories (giving impromptu speeches on scenario questions related to China provided by the organizing committee), aiming to test students’ ability to analyze and solve problems in multicultural and intercultural contexts.
This award fully demonstrates the solid professional foundation and good comprehensive quality of our university’s students, and it is a manifestation of the effectiveness of its applied talent cultivation. Throughout the years, our university has deeply implemented the spirit of the Modernization of Education in China 2035, National Standards for Undergraduate Teaching Quality of English Majors in Higher Education Institutions, and Guidelines for College English Teaching. We adhere to the principle of promoting learning, teaching and researching through competitions, and the combination of industry and education. We fully leverage the educational function of subject competition platforms; promote innovation in talent cultivation models and approaches in the university; and cultivate talents with Chinese sentiments and international perspectives—composite international talents with professional skills, intercultural communication skills, and global competence. In the future, our university will continue to uphold the spirit of “respecting morality, seeking truth, and accumulating knowledge for the new”, leverage its existing advantages and characteristics, promote the construction of international communication and cultural exchange capabilities among university students, consolidate the achievements of English major education and teaching reform in our university, promote the better integration of Chinese culture into the world, and promote the progress of human civilization and that of world peace and development.
